KELOWNA, BC – UBC Okanagan men’s volleyball squad has signed a third Team BC player for next season as Earl Marriot 6’ libero, Jeremy Fostvelt has agreed to leave the coast and spend his next five years digging up volleyballs at UBC Okanagan for Greg Poitras and the Heat.

As Team BC’s starting libero Jeremy was known for the way he plays defense, without fear as he goes after every ball, and Jeremy was a huge reason why his Earl Marriott squad ended up in the provincial final. Earl Marriot coach Richard Thain adds, “Jeremy graduates from Earl Marriott having completed his third year with the senior program. In each of his 3 years the EMS team has gotten better as he has improved. This past December Jeremy helped lead his Mariners team to a Silver medal at the AAA high school provincials in Kelowna. He has worked very hard over the past 16 months with his high school and club teams and has developed into the top libero in the Province.”
Future coach Greg Poitras agrees, “Jeremy is a very special player as he has come a long ways to becoming arguably BC's best high school libero. On the court he has shown the perseverance and quickness that top CIS liberos possess. He is not afraid to get in front of any driven ball and simply finds a way to get the ball in the air on defense. He has impressive reaction time and moves across the floor very quickly. Jeremy is a solid serve receiver and I have no doubt he will adapt to the increased velocity of the ball in the CIS. Jeremy is capable of seeing some game time in his first year and will ill push any starting member of the Heat at libero next year."
Future member of the Heat Jeremy Fostvelt adds, "I wanted to play on a CIS team that has the potential to compete with the best. UBCO Heat has ranked high in BCCAA and they will do well at the CIS level. I have heard great things about Greg Poitras as a coach and the fact that he won coach of the year speaks for itself.”
Jeremy is not just an athlete as an honor roll student he looks forward to academics part of a student athlete’s life as will, “I will be pursuing engineering at UBCO and I am excited to take on that challenge. I considered all the other universities in British Columbia and decided that UBCO would be the perfect fit for me because it had the combination of an outstanding engineering program, a good volleyball team, and an award winning coach. I have been to Kelowna so many times to compete in volleyball and I am looking forward to spending the next few years there. I am really keen on the new engineering facility that will be available for fall 2011.”
Coach Thain thinks’ Jeremy will have no problems as “He is a good student and has proven his leadership with his teammates on and off the floor [at Earl Marriot]. Jeremy has a great attitude on the court and is motivated to work very hard to become a better player. This will serve him well under Coach Poitras next fall. Jeremy has the ability to step in and contribute to the program right away as UBCO prepares to enter its first season in the CIS Canada West."
With Poitras’ three talented new recruits signed before February things are looking to be exciting on the campus at UBC Okanagan next year as the Heat look to not be satisfied merely being a member in the ultra-competitive Canada West, but this men’s volleyball team is building a foundation to take on the schools of Canada West.
