BCCAA Provincial Championships at OBCO

Mariners eke out win against Avalanche in 5 set thriller

KELOWNA, BC – The 4th seeded Vancouver Island University Mariners dispatched the 5th seeded College of the Rockies Avalanche Thursday night in the Quarterfinals of the BCCAA Volleyball Provincial Championships 3 sets to 2 (25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 15-12).

Women Cascades advance with win over Chargers in Provincial Championship

KELOWNA, BC – The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades swept the Camosun College Chargers Thursday night 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-20), ending the Chargers’ playoff ambitions in the Quarterfinals at the gymnasium on the Okanagan campus of the University of British Columbia.

Several awards were given out before the match: UFV’s Kayla Bruce and Brittany Stewart received 1st and 2nd Team All-Star honours, respectively; UFV’s Denise Joy was named to the All-Rookie Team, as well as Camosun’s Suzanna Campbell and Elizabeth Davis.  Davis, a Leftside hitter native to Victoria, also received 2nd Team All-Star honours and was named the BCCAA Rookie of the Year.

Campbell, the Chargers’ rookie setter, was Camosun’s Player of the Match, finishing with 17 assists and 5 digs.  2nd year Outside Hitter from UFV, Jenna Evans, was named her team’s Player of the Match with a team-high 7 kills, but made a bigger impact on defense with her match-high 12 digs.  Defense was key in the match for UFV leading the Cascade’s to victory, UF V was able to accumulate 41 digs to Camosun’s 35, as well as 6.0 team blocks to Camosun’s 4.0.

The Chargers are out, but UFV will now play in a semi-final bout with the home team Heat Friday night at 6:00pm.  Having advanced, UFV has at least two more matches this weekend and is guaranteed a shot at some hardware to bring home.

BCCAA Provincial Championships at OBCO

Bearcats beat Cascades, advance to Provincial Semi-final

KELOWNA, BC – The UFV Cascades Men’s team is headed home after Thursday’s match against the Columbia Bible College, being swept by the Bearcats 3-0 at UBC Okanagan (25-23, 25-19, 25-19). CBC’s Danny Grant and UFV’s Aaron Flanagan were named Players of the Match for their respective teams.

Global Music Fest

The 2011 Global Music Fest event will feature numerous local musicians and interactive performance groups showcasing their original music. This year’s headliner is slam poet Shane Koyczan from Penticton. Joining the event will be humanitarian non-profit organizations making a difference in the world with information display tables about their organizations for guests to enjoy during the music. Between performance sets these ethnic and cultural groups will be doing short presentations sharing information on the work that they do internationally.

Capilano Blues advance to Provincial Semi-final with victory over CBC

KELOWNA, BC – The 3rd seeded Capilano Blues Women’s team eliminated the Columbia Bible College Bearcats from the 2011 BCCAA Volleyball Provincials Championships in the tournaments opening match Thursday afternoon. The Bearcats lost 3 sets to none (25-19, 25-19, 25-10) at UBC Okanagan.

Volleyball Provincial Championship set to kick off Thursday

KELOWNA, BC – The University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus is ready to welcome the best male and female collegiate volleyball teams from around the province starting Thursday afternoon, the first match is set for 1:00pm when the third seed, Capilano University Blues women’s volleyball squad will face off against the sixth seeded Columbia Bible College Bearcats from Abbotsford. The Blues will be led by longtime coach Wayne Desjardins, first team all-star Michelle Torresan, second team all-star Ashley Cousens and All-rookie team member Sydney Thornton. The Bearcats are coached by Janelle Rozema and although the Bearcats are a team made up of mostly first year players they boast 2 fourth year players, Hannah Antonio and middle Mariel Eberts to help the young team in their first round matchup. The winner will go on to the semi-final versus the Vancouver Island Mariners Friday at 1:00pm. The Mariners, the second seed, spent over two month’s ranked first in the nation and will bring with them four all-stars players. The two first team all-stars are Cheyla Reader and Lindsay McLoughlin the second teamers are setter Dani Smith and third year middle blocker Jacqueline Doleman, the team is coached by Shane Hyde.
