Mariners eke out win against Avalanche in 5 set thriller
KELOWNA, BC – The 4th seeded Vancouver Island University Mariners dispatched the 5th seeded College of the Rockies Avalanche Thursday night in the Quarterfinals of the BCCAA Volleyball Provincial Championships 3 sets to 2 (25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 15-12).
Though down in a 2-0 hole against the Avalanche, the Mariners found a way to rally themselves to an impressive comeback win in the 3rd set, followed by the series tying win in the 4th, throwing the match into a final, deciding set. The Mariners’ momentum eventually carried them through to the win in the 5th set 15-12.
BCCAA men’s volleyball Rookie of the Year Rylan Brouwer was named VIU’s Player of the Match, finishing with team-highs of 15 kills and 13 digs. Rookie Outside Hitter Jeremias Guenter of the Avalanche was named his team’s Player of the Match with 7 kills and 4 blocks.
The offense between the two teams was neck and neck all match long, but it was the effort on defense that brought the Mariners storming back into the match after being down 2 sets to 0. The Mariners notched 62 digs over 5 sets compared to COTR’s 54. 4th year setter Brett Weninger and 5th year setter Ryan Thibault took turns orchestrating VIU’s offense, tallying 27 and 20 assists, respectively. Setter Brodie Flis of COTR led the match with 47 assists en-route to the team’s 55 kills.
With COTR out, the Mariners will advance to a semi-final matchup with the UBC Okanagan Heat Friday night at 8:00 pm.
