KELOWNA, BC – The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades swept the Camosun College Chargers Thursday night 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-20), ending the Chargers’ playoff ambitions in the Quarterfinals at the gymnasium on the Okanagan campus of the University of British Columbia.
Several awards were given out before the match: UFV’s Kayla Bruce and Brittany Stewart received 1st and 2nd Team All-Star honours, respectively; UFV’s Denise Joy was named to the All-Rookie Team, as well as Camosun’s Suzanna Campbell and Elizabeth Davis. Davis, a Leftside hitter native to Victoria, also received 2nd Team All-Star honours and was named the BCCAA Rookie of the Year.
Campbell, the Chargers’ rookie setter, was Camosun’s Player of the Match, finishing with 17 assists and 5 digs. 2nd year Outside Hitter from UFV, Jenna Evans, was named her team’s Player of the Match with a team-high 7 kills, but made a bigger impact on defense with her match-high 12 digs. Defense was key in the match for UFV leading the Cascade’s to victory, UF V was able to accumulate 41 digs to Camosun’s 35, as well as 6.0 team blocks to Camosun’s 4.0.
The Chargers are out, but UFV will now play in a semi-final bout with the home team Heat Friday night at 6:00pm. Having advanced, UFV has at least two more matches this weekend and is guaranteed a shot at some hardware to bring home.
