KELOWNA, BC - With the Kermodes eliminated from the playoffs last night at the hands of the Heat, the two teams played Saturday going in different directions. The Kermodes were looking to get on the bus and head home while the Heat used this as an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming provincial championships. Both teams battled hard in the first half but in the second the Heat were able to put away the Kermodes with an 82-55 victory.

Mack Roth, the first year wingman from Terry Fox Secondary, talked about the way the team played saying, “we really wanted to start off and play up-tempo, play hard and focus on defense.”

The Heat achieved the exact start Mack talked about as they scored the game’s first 8 points and ran the score to 16-2 before Quest Coach Sean Shook called a timeout to stop the run. Mack led the Heat to a 45-31 lead at the half, scoring all 14 of his points in the first half.

UBC was able to bury the Kermodes in the third quarter, their defense unyielding. The Heat held Quest to just 1 field goal and 6 total points as they won the quarter 23-6, extending their lead to 68-37. In the game the Heat played all twelve players with their starters seeing the least minutes; no player played more than 23 minutes and no player played less than 10.

“We had great contributions from everybody on the bench,” added Mack. The story of the game may well have been the offensive display shown by Rutland Secondary graduate Connor McCormack, who led the team in scoring with 15 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and captured the Eastside Mario’s – Landmark Cinema’s player of the game. Every player minus point guard Dan Benson hit the scoresheet; Alex Roth and Steve Morrison in limited minutes both put up good numbers. Roth scored 13 points and hauled in 5 rebounds while Morrison was his usual blue-collar self with a 7 point 9 rebound game.

The Heat will now wait to find out their draw in Abbotsford at Columbia Bible College during the Provincial Championships. The Heat know they will play on Thursday March 3 but will have to wait for Saturday’s games to be completed before they will find out who they will be matched up against and at what time.
