Heat add Team BC Libero for next season in Men's Volleyball

KELOWNA, BC – UBC Okanagan men’s volleyball squad has signed a third Team BC player for next season as Earl Marriot 6’ libero, Jeremy Fostvelt has agreed to leave the coast and spend his next five years digging up volleyballs at UBC Okanagan for Greg Poitras and the Heat.

KELOWNA, BC – UBC Okanagan men’s volleyball coach Greg Poitras is wasting no time in preparing for his initial season in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association, the highest level of post secondary athletic competition in the country.  Coach Poitras has added another versatile athlete to compliment George Elliot’s Jonathan Russo, whom signed with the Heat late last year and.

KMBA Spring League Registration Feb 1-Mar 15

On-line Registration will be open on this website February 1st!  Full details will be provided on the site that day.  Please check back and register early to ensure placement on a team.  Deadline for Early Registration will be March 15th after which kids will be placed on a wait list. KMBA must order uniforms and find sponsors for each team so cut off needs to be one month before Opening Day on April 16th this year. We look forward to a huge registration this year so check back early!

Art on the Line

Art on the Line features works by students, noted local artists, visual arts professors and alumni and offers a variety of media and styles -- including drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, sculpture and mixed media -- to meet the tastes and interests of everyone. Ticket holders will select the artworks based on a random lottery system. Time is provided for previewing the art and building wish lists. With 120 pieces to choose from, all 100 participants are assured a choice of juried art. The event will also feature live music by the Malarkeys. Doors open at 6 p.m. for ticket holders to view the artwork, with the draw beginning at 7:30 p.m. Those looking to come out, enjoy the atmosphere and observe the action can purchase a ticket for $10 at the door between 7 and 7:30 pm.
Art on the Line raises funds in support of the fourth-year visual arts students' graduate exhibition, the Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Art and the Arts Council of the Central Okanagan.

International Year of Chemistry celebrations

Chemistry: our life, our future
The International Year of Chemistry 2011 (IYC 2011) is a worldwide celebration of the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the wellbeing of humankind.

Under the unifying theme Chemistry: our life, our future, IYC 2011 is intended to reach across the globe, with opportunities for public participation at the local, regional, and national level.

As part of the IYC 2011 celebrations, the Chemistry Department and Chemistry Course Union have organized an IYC 2011 celebration on January 28.The celebration will feature cake, prize raffles, and the opportunity to make balloon molecules.

Visiting Artist Speaker Series: Steve DiPaola

Artificial Intelligence as a Toolkit for Interactive and Art Systems
Steve DiPaola -- computer based cognitive scientist, artist and researcher -- will be on campus in January to give a talk as part of the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies' Visiting Artist Speaker Series.
DiPaola uses Artificial Intelligence to create new types of art and expression systems for use in communication, learning, interactive games and digital media systems.
In this talk he will discuss and demonstrate his work in this area and show his ongoing work with the Vancouver Aquarium to create a life-based Virtual Beluga Whale. This talk is free and open to the public.

Kelowna and The Rotary Centre for the Arts presents Toronto’s Mia Sheard and some of her favorite fellow musicians perform an annual Joni Mitchell tribute, recorded and broadcast for 2009 CBC's Canada Live. Joni’s music is not easy to play, therefore not often performed by other artists. The line-up features critically acclaimed Mia Sheard, Lori Cullen, Kevin Fox and David Matheson (Moxy Früvous) with an all-star backing band.
