KELOWNA, BC - The Heat have righted the ship after dropping their last 3 games as the handed the Quest University Kermodes an 82-72 loss. Dan Briscoe led all Heat scorers with 16 points to garner the Eastside Mario’s - Landmark Cinemas Player of the Game and with the victory the Heat have eliminated the Kermodes from the Provincial Championships that will be held March 3-5 at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford.
The Heat started the game playing with great intensity as they were able to jump out to a quick 13-3 lead on the stellar inside play of big men Simon Pelland, Mack Roth and Dave Mackay. Quest coach Sean Shook quickly called a timeout to stop the Heat run. From that point on the Kermodes handed it to the Heat finishing the quarter on an 18-6 run. After one quarter of play it was Quest 21, Heat 19.
The start of the second quarter saw more of the same for the Heat as the Kermodes extended their to 28-19 before the Heat were able to find the groove again, going on their own 19-6 run to close out the half with a 38-34 lead. At the half the Heat’s scoring was widely distributed with 8 players on the scoresheet, Mack Roth led the Heat with 8 while Dan Briscoe and Dave Mackay dropped 7 points each. The Heat had a tough time stopping the long distance attack of the Kermodes as they hit on 4 of 9 from the three point line with Tyler Thorau going 2/3 to lead the Kermodes with 8 points at the half.
The Heat backcourt really took over in the third quarter with Alex Roth going for 7 of his 13 points in the third and second year guard Dan Briscoe adding 5 points as the Heat won the quarter 23-18 and extended their lead to 9 61-52.
The fourth quarter was won by the Heat on the boards as Steve Morrison, in his third year out of Argyle Secondary in North Vancouver, grabbed 3 offensive rebounds and was able to convert them to 6 of his 8 points in the quarter as the Heat powered their way to a 82-72 victory.
“We spent all week working on the things that we need to do to be a successful team,” added assistant coach Cary Mellon. “There were moments in tonight’s game that we were able to execute. Unfortunately we just had too many unhealthy bodies as more than one of our players spent a good portion of reading week trying to recover from the flu. I think that is why we lacked some flow and energy at times; the guys just weren’t at full strength. I wouldn’t be surprised if Quest had the same story since more than one of their regulars did not dress for tonight’s game. It will be interesting to see what each of these teams have left in the tank tomorrow.”
Both of these teams will battle again tomorrow night after the women’s team celebrate graduating guard Jenna Kantz in a post game ceremony. Women tip off at 4:00pm and the men at 6:00pm. This will be the final home games for the UBC Okanagan Heat men’s and women’s basketball teams.
