ABBOTSFORD, BC - Not only did this game mark the return to action for the women’s basketball team to league play after the Christmas break, but it also marked the return of Vernon native, Madison Kaneda, to the Heat’s roster. Neither the team nor Kaneda showed any signs of rust as the Heat dismissed the Bearcats 94-64 with Kaneda second on the team in scoring for the night with 17 points.

The Heat’s athleticism was on full display as the full court pressure of UBC Okanagan forced the Bearcats into 25 turnovers. Nicole Duke, a third year guard from Sherwood Park Alberta, led the way against her former team with 5 steals, she also contributed 10 points.

With the addition of Kaneda to the roster and the continued improvement of second year point guard, Ashley Briker, the Heat did not miss the play of senior guard, Jenna Kantz. Kantz’s is in the nursing program and due to the course curriculum she is unable to travel on select Friday’s as she completes her degree.

Ashley Briker led all Heat scorers with 26 points in just 26 minutes of floor time; Briker was very efficient scoring on 11 of her 15 shots. Briker added 4 assists and 4 steals and hit on 3 of 5 from beyond the arc to complete her impressive stat line.

Mackenzie Carnes, a first year player from the Fraser Valley, made herself at home scoring 11 points; veteran post Roz Huber led the team with 10 boards.
The Heat will go for the season sweep against the winless Bearcats Saturday at 1:00pm
