BALLET KELOWNA ANNOUNCES SPRING 2011 TOUR

The Company’s Spring Program Explores Action and Consequence Through Dance

The presentation includes a wide range of dance that explores the physical relationship of movement to music and sight to sound encompassing the “inno-classical” objective of the subscription season. “Traditionally the act of dance creation presupposed the choreographic outcome,” explains David LaHay, the company’s artistic director. “However, more frequently today, ballet is a direct consequence of the interplay between the choreographer and the dancers with the consequential outcome unknown until the final moment of creation.”
Auguste Bournonville’s The Flower Festival Pas de Deux (1858) tells the delightful story of young lovers in Genzano and Dvorak Dances (2006), a simple evocation of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak’s lovely music.
The 2011 Spring tour also includes the world premiere of Gioconda Barbuto’s Capture, where the action and reaction of the dancers with each other determined the beginning, middle and end of this intimate exploration of space. Choreographed in 1999, In Stride is the direct consequence of challenging the classically trained ballet dancer to throw out all the stringent rules of ballet and explore linear and angular movement that mirrors the hard-driving and pulsating music of Glenn Branca.
Ballet Kelowna premiered Simone Orlando’s stage within (2010) last Fall and the company is proud to include it on the Spring program. In this ballet, a dancer must face the emotionally shattering reality of the end of a career as she embraces the spotlight and her audience one last time.
Capturing the entertainment interest of all members of the family, Ballet Kelowna performs to sold out audiences and enhances the image of ballet, making the art form more inviting, fun and personally meaningful. Proudly "made in Kelowna" this boutique "inno-classical" professional ballet company is a dedicated community partner committed to inspire, educate and entertain through the energy and artistry of ballet.
