ABBOTSFORD, BC - The Heat did not struggle Friday night without captain Jenna Kantz in the lineup, but the difference was noticeable on the scoreboard with her in the lineup Saturday afternoon. Jenna’s 22 points in the first half pushed the Heat to a 69-19 point lead at the half, Jenna finished with 26 for the game as the Heat sailed on to a 112-39 drubbing of the Bearcat’s in Abbotsford today.

“I wish there was a way for me to keep Jenna around next year as well,” remarked head coach Heather Semeniuk looking at how much her captain does on the court. “It sure would have been nice having her veteran presence and ability around next year when we compete in the Canada West Universities Athletic Conference.” With Jenna’s 26 points tonight she increases her season per game average to just over 20 points per game and has now moved up to fifth place on the all time scoring list at the institution. If Jenna keeps up her current pace in six games she will be the schools all time leading point getter passing current Heat assistant coach Mandy Trenholm and her 797 total points for first place.

The Bearcats who have yet to win a game this season provided little resistance today as the Heat forced 37 turnovers leading directly to 60 points, most of them of the uncontested lay-up variety which helped the Heat’s shoot over 50% from the field for  the game.

With such a high scoring game many of the Heat players boasted impressive stat lines, but Madison Kaneda’s line was very impressive for not playing or practicing with the team in the first semester. Kaneda scored 18 points added 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals in over 24 minutes of floor time. Madison has not missed a beat dropping 35 points in her first weekend of play and will now solidify the Heat backcourt with the likes of Jenna Kantz, Ashley Briker and Melissa Irish.

With third year post Roz Huber out of the lineup today, second year post player from Victoria, Kiersten Shulhan, stepped into a starting roll and controlled the paint with 9 rebounds and 10 points on 5/6 shooting from the floor.

This upcoming weekend is a special home stand for the Heat women’s basketball team. Following their game on Friday night versus the Douglas College Royals the 2010 Women’s basketball provincial championship banner will be lifted to the rafters. The Friday game starts at 6:00pm with the two teams back at it again Saturday at 4:00pm.
