ABBOTSFORD, BC - Saturday afternoon proved to be a delight as the Heat where able to pull away in the second half escaping the Bearcats claws and claiming a 92-58 victory, for a sweep of the two game series in Abbotsford. It was to be expected that the Heat would be unable to shut down the Bearcat offence as efficiently as Friday night when UBC Okanagan held CBC to just 34 points over the entire 40 minute game. The Bearcats were able to cause the Heat all-sorts of problems Saturday in the first half, equalling their Friday night total of 34 points in the first half alone.  The Heat went into the break leading by ten, 44-34, Cockrill tallied 13 of his game high 21 points in the first half nailing three of four three pointers. Six foot six post Connor McCormack, a first year player from Rutland Secondary, added 7 of his 13 points in the game in the first half as well. Connor has received limited minutes thus far this season due to his involvement on the national BMX team but coach Darren Semeniuk hopes Connor can work his way into some playing time. “Connor is done with his BMX’ing for the rest of the season and is now able to concentrate on school and basketball. He has so much athletic ability it will be very interesting to see what he can work up to in the next few months. After the first semester in which Connor had to miss a fair amount of practice and even a few games he is now really starting to learn how to play basketball at this level and be more a part of the team.”

With second year guard Iain Con unable to make the trip with a variety of ailments another first year product from Kelowna received significant playing time this weekend. Dan Benson fresh out of Kelowna Christian was inserted into the starting line-up for both games against CBC and played very well. Dan led the team in minutes played on Saturday with 24 and was second on Friday night with 23. “Dan was able to take advantage of this opportunity and really become comfortable on the court running the team’s offense this weekend. I think he will now have the confidence going forward to know that when he is on the court it is his job to run the offence and be a pest on defence,” adds Semeniuk, “I think the solid play of everybody this weekend bodes well for us as we would like to continue to get better as a team.”

The second half of the game looked much more like the Friday night tilt with the Heat dominating both ends of the floor and using their defence to create transition opportunities and extending their lead until the final buzzer. The Heat spread the minutes and the points out as everybody got on the scoresheet with no one player playing more than Benson’s 24 minutes. Steve Morrison was a beast on the glass with 11 rebounds in 18 minutes of play. The Heat were able to take of the ball as well committing 15 turnovers for the game but only 5 in the second half.

The Heat are at home for the next two weekends, Friday night UBC Okanagan will play host to the Douglas College Royals. The men’s game will start after the women’s team raise their provincial championship banner form 2010 tip-off will approximately be at 8:00pm. Saturday night the Heat play the same Royals at 6:00pm.
